Mental Health Association of New York City
NEW YORK, NY – MHA-NYC (the Mental Health Association of New York City) announced that it has been awarded a grant from the Office for Victims of Crime of the U.S. Department of Justice to assist and support the 9-11 community in conjunction with the 10th anniversary.
Since 2001, MHA-NYC has been a leader in creating innovative solutions that combine technology and clinical expertise to address the emotional aftermath of crises and disasters on individuals, families, and communities. Beginning with 9-11, followed by Hurricanes Katrina and Wilma, and the most recent advent of the Gulf Coast oil spill, MHA-NYC has been pivotal in linking people to mental health services in their local communities.
“MHA-NYC is honored to provide this additional support to the 9-11 community,” said MHA-NYC President and CEO Giselle Stolper. “As September 11, 2011 approaches, heightened public awareness, extensive media coverage, and special events commemorating the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks will not only serve to honor victims and heroes, but can also serve to re-open emotional wounds. We need to make sure people know where to turn for emotional support.”
The Department of Justice Grant, to be administered by MHA-NYC, will offer the following services to the 9-11 community, including those planning to participate in 10th anniversary activities to be held in New York, Washington, D.C. and Pennsylvania:
- A toll-free help line for mental health assessment, counseling and referrals in the callers’ community;
- Travel aid for eligible family members to anniversary events at the three sites;
- Comfortable and private meeting areas nearby the three sites where family members can gather.
- Counseling and other supportive services at the Family Support Centers.
- Educational information about the emotional effects of anniversaries on people exposed to traumatic events.
