Theodore B. Olson, Esteemed Legal Mind and Beloved Board Member, Passes Away

ARLINGTON, VA – The Pentagon Memorial Fund Board of Directors is deeply saddened by the passing of Theodore B. Olson, an esteemed board member and treasured colleague. Ted’s profound courage in sharing his story of September 11, despite his own personal loss that day, left an indelible mark on all who knew him.

Ted Olson will be remembered as one of the great legal minds of our time, having served as a partner at Gibson Dunn and as the 42nd Solicitor General of the United States from 2001 to 2004, during a critical period in American history. His legacy of public service and landmark legal contributions addressed some of the most pivotal American issues of his lifetime.

Ted’s five years of service to the Pentagon Memorial Fund were deeply valued, especially as he represented the families who experienced loss in the Pentagon attack. This past June, Ted shared his story at a PMF remembrance event, attended by leaders of 9/11 memorials from across the nation, reflecting his enduring commitment to preserving the memory of September 11.

“Ted was an incredible leader who has left an indelible mark on this nation. We thank him for his years of service on the Pentagon Memorial Fund Board of Directors,” said Pentagon Memorial Fund, Inc. Board Chairman and President Sean T. Connaughton. “Like all those who had the privilege of knowing him, we will miss him greatly.”

The Pentagon Memorial Fund and its community will miss his leadership, dedication, and unwavering commitment to honoring the lives lost on 9/11 and the sacrifices made in response. The Pentagon Memorial Fund extends heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues. His example will continue to inspire our mission to remember September 11 always.
